Thirsty Thursday

Holiday Mimosa

Ring in the New Year with a taste of this delicious drink.

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 Cup Orange Liqueur (like Grand Marnier®)
  • 2 Tablespoons White Sugar
  • 1 Cup of Orange Juice
  • 1 (think 750 mL) Bottle Brut Champagne (chilled)
Pour the orange liqueur in a bowl. Put the sugar in a saucer. This will set up a little working station so dip the rims of the glasses (this recipe serves 6) in the orange liqueur and then in the sugar. After the glasses have a thin sugared rim, pour the remaining orange liqueur in each glass. Add champagne.

Enjoy.

Loves it, Hates It

Posted by: L

So, fellow readers and bloggers, I'm sitting here rifling through the J.Crew website (oh, don't act so surprised!) after I received their 20% off Final Sale and Free Shipping E-mail a couple days ago.

Yea, it was just Christmas (Hanukkah, Chanukah, Kwanza, Festivus...), but I'm looking at essentials. Now is not the time to raise your eyebrows and judge.

(Enter "EXTRA20" at checkout. Expires January 3. Make sure you read the fine print...it's free shipping after the discount has been applied and your bag must have $150 in it then..ohhh yea, they getcha with that fine print. sneaky skeaky...scowl, scowl. Not because $150 is so hard to put in your bag, it is just that I am more apt to virtually swipe the plastic when there is no minimum.)

Now, onto why this post is a "Hates It." (Aside from their sneaky fine print!)

Loves the Crew. Hates that there are several items just sitting in my shopping bag that are on sale, including one such navy Jackie cardi and one black bouquet sash belt that while on sale, shall not qualify for the 20% off because they are not final sale. Why do you do this to me, J.? Sale, but not "Final Sale"? Oh, come on!

Even though I currently have one belt, very similar to the one I am lusting after that I had.to.have. and have not styled yet (aka it is sitting on top of a pile of other clothes. SHAME.) ... I'm just waiting for that perfect moment. heh heh And, I would probably wait the same on the bouquet belt and Jackie cardi..but, I do love the cardi.

(And, I accidentally ordered a light blue cami from the Crew that just needs the cardi to complete it. It needs its big sister. I know. Post on that one to come later.)

Ugh, what to do? What to do? Do I wait and hope they qualify at a later date and risk missing out? (Although they should usually have the navy Jackie..the belt is another story. I did also scour the Crew in Copley yesterday, nada. And their Jackies were full price.)

I am shaking my fist at you, J.Crew!

Loves It, Hates It

The price tag on Target's N.Y.L.A. Extravaganza Pump: "Hates It"

For the record B thinks the shoes are super cute and just to die for. Unfortunately, Target has decided to price them at $109.99 (online price).

No, your eyes do not deceive you, those shoes are over $100 (without shipping and handling) and from TARGET!!

I could understand if you went to Target to buy a TV, camera, etc. and the product was over $100 that's expected but for shoes? No, No, No. If I decide to buy a pair a shoes at Target I would expect between $20 and $35, not $110.00.

Don't forget about its slogan. "Expect More. Pay Less."

After several years of frugal shopping at Target I have come to expect more and pay less unfortunately now is the time it decides to list a pair of shoes for $110. One question. How is that paying less? If I wished to spend that money I would go to Nordstrom.

Maybe Target decided to follow H&M and start to add designer items at a fraction of what it normally would be (H&M has lines from Jimmy Choo and now advertising Sonia Rykiel).

However, with a solgan, Expect More. Pay Less the price of these shoes is just absurd. B could understand if Target decided to price them between $50 and $75. Fine. But for $110. B just doesn't understand.

Loves It, Hates It

Lady Gaga making a cameo in Beyoncé music video: "Loves It!"

Lady Gaga makes a sexy cameo and is featured on the remix of Beyoncé's song "Video Phone".

Could it get any better?

Maybe....if there was a throw back to the Lady Marmalade days when four or five fab singers/performers team up together to create one hot single. Perhaps this time around we could see Madonna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. Rihanna would be an amazing add to mix up the dynamics to form the Fab Five (B is obviously starting to get ahead of herself).

Looking at it from a practical standpoint all five of them have a connection with at least one other Fab Five member so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch. Plus there have even been several collaborations already...so let's just push those collaborations a little bit further.

Three words to describe this type of project: Music Executive's Fanatsy.

*Sigh* If only.

Hot Mess or Fashion Success?

So, this past weekend L visited Forever 21. Now, it has been over a year since she has stepped foot in this fine clothier. Partly because it's a clusterfuck, partly because she needs her partner to help her stay calm.

(Last time with Shawnie, said partner in need, Summer 2008, in the Dirtiest State in the Union -- XO MISS YOU!)

Now, a little preface: Before the girls' summer shopping extravaganza, she had purchased a cute black and white pencil skirt (trés work appropriate...and from "back in the day" when the only F21 near her was in Provi!)...only to have it rip up the back slit. She had it reinforced, but it ripped again.

Now, we don't know if it's the Forever 21 craftsmanship (or lack thereof) or if it's L's ever-expanding assets that caused the double rip around the glutes. But, in her defense, she also had a cute leopard print sweater that lost most of it's coloring and became pilly after one wash...so she was a little skeptical.

And, onto the story: But, dear Readers, this time she was with Momma, and Momma has quite the eye!! And so, L had quite the case of the grabby hands this weekend!

She scored a number of cute sweaters (adorned with pearls and bows and beads) for work (that she's hoping and praying they won't get destroyed after one wash) and this:

(Oh, it's going to be super cute with a blank tank underneath and black leggings! ::squeals with delight at childish find::)

LOOK AT THAT TUTU!!

(Hey now, let her have this! She stayed out of Abercrombie...even if it took all her willpower!)

But, lets stop for a minute and look at this skirt and ask ourselves a collective,
"What the F--k?"

It's like the skirt's little grabby hands are trying to grope you! "Ahh, no! My unmentionables!!!"

You stay away, you Michael Jackson belt! (Too soon??)

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't boys suppose to try to get up/in your skirt??
heh heh heh

Water Cooler

Setting: Mid-November. B is at her desk in the front of the office. B's manager comes out to the front for a quick second. B and her manager start chatting.

Black Friday manages to come up in the convo and B without hesitation tells her manager how much she loves Black Friday and it should be a recognized holiday. B's manager had a little celebration for Black Friday too...her 25th Wedding Anniversary!!

Well after hearing this B was so ecstatic and said: "Oh my! That's wonderful!! What month did you get married in?" (sad part is B was completely serious at the time).

B's manager looks at her confused and simply says: "November".

B's only response: "Duh. You just said Black Friday was your anniversary and it is in November what a silly question...it's been a rough week".

Really B? Really?

Way to make an impression!

Frugal is the New Black

Black Friday is one of the B's favorite holidays due to all the fab deals that are out there for everyone!

If you have time this Friday and need to find a great deal try venturing out to some stores for a few HOT deals!

Here are some tips to make your Black Friday a success

1. Plan Ahead! This is really important. You want to have a game plan so that you stay focus on what you need to purchase and impulse buy. Additionally you the stores open up at different times so if you can plan what you need, where to buy and the order you will hit up the stores it will save time in the long run. Check out couponing.about.com for a listing of stores and times they open.

2. Go Early! The best bargains are generally in the early hours so you want to get there early. As mentioned above the stores open at different times so you can hit up the stores as they open if you plan accordingly that way you are there for the best bargain before moving onto your next store.

3. Beware of the loser products! Some stores will give an unbelievable discount solely because they want to get rid of it. Planning what you need ahead of time will let you do a little research on the product so you will know if it falls into one of that category of loser products.

4. Be thankful for your cellie! You can totally check out the competition and determine if you should buy the product at store A or if it is $10 cheaper at store B.

5. Be on the look out for expensive warranties! You can get some major deals on electronic but sometimes a store will sell the electronic with an expensive warranty. Watch out for this if you want to get the best bargains.

7. Check online! With shopping online being super sometimes you can beat the crowds by shopping online or you can get a heads up on the fab deals your fav store is offering.

Enjoy Black Friday!

Eye Candy

"Oh, why hello there Don. Roger. What brings you to CC?"

In the words of B, "delicious."

These two men have been the demise of L's motivation for the past few weeks, recapping the first two seasons on DVD.

Moving on...

Lifestyle

Another Crass Post, Brought to you by L!
And this post is cordially dedicated to you, T. Consider it an advance on your CLE credits. This post shall be worth +1hr. Document and receive.

Background: In one previous post, L was discussing staying friends with your ex and the appreciated "complimentary beej" that some times (ok, probably more often than not) comes in the awkward phase where you're trying to strike the balance of being friends with your ex, carrying along their excess baggage, and moving forward.

T approached L and did not quite know what a "beej" was.

(Ok, let's pause right there for a moment and get this straight so T does not get made fun of on the playground: He had never seen the act of fellatio spelt that way. You know, phonetically. Not that he didn't know what a "beej" was...per se. Moving on. T, your credibility has been saved. Thank me later.)

Now, to come to T's and other's rescue for possible future posts, L has just so happened to stumble upon this gem: 6 Bits of Sex Slang To Make You A More Cunning Linguist.

(Yea, read that title fast and get the giggles, too. It's Ok.)

A little preview for your reading pleasure:
Sascrotch
Definition: Pubic hair that’s been allowed to grow wild; pubic hair that has the potential to scare off potential sexual partners
Example: “If I don’t take care of this sascrotch pronto, I won’t be getting lucky tonight!”

Ok, now get going on your vocab lesson! Quiz Friday!

Hot Mess or Fashion Success?

Dear Mr. Blahnik:

This is why Carrie is not prancing around the streets of New York City in your kicks this year, but is, instead, sporting sky-high Louboutins.

I must ask you, "Really?? What were you thinking?"

I'm all for "blue" for Resort 2010...but denim pumps??

You might as well suggest that the Canadian Tuxedo is chic. (It is not chic, readers! Never, I repeat, NEVER match denim and denim.)

Your rhinestone detail has not made up for the fact that you put denim...denim! on a shoe. Pleated denim.

I am looking at you with disgust, Mr. Blahnik.

Sincerely,
L

(And, no, readers. This is not a special Manolo crafted for KMart, or even H&M, like Jimmy Choo and his PVC-version shoes. This is a Neiman's find. A Neiman's find retailing at $715.00. The feeling it gives you in the pit of your stomach, like you know something terrible just happened, is why it is online-only.)

Frugal is the New Black

For office casual, one of L's favorite things to do is take a plain, basic t and then load up on the jewelry to dress it up (because anything sparkly can cure a bad mood!). (This look is also boss-approved, as L received the, "You're looking very "Brooks Brothers" today," compliment. Win.)

Together, the pieces are perfect for a workplace's business casual atmosphere and comfy enough for the loooong after-hours class sessions.

Here are a few options to get you started, priced high to low:

Ribbed featherweight henley, J.Crew, $36.50
(yum yum yum!)

Supersoft ribbed henley T, Gap, originally $22.50, now $15.00

Mossimo Supply Co. Juniors V-Neck Henley Top, Target, $12.99

Hot Mess or Fashion Success?

Neon is one of those hot trends this season, especially neon pink. So if you want to rock this trend, you are going to want to make sure you don't turn out trash, but that you remain class.

As seen below, neon colors can quickly become overkill.

The girl above paired neon green leggings with a neon tie-dyed tank. There was too much going on here to work.

However, there are ways to put neon in your outfit in a classy/trendy way. Here are some tips that will allow you to either dazzle in your neon ensemble or add a little neon punch to your wardrobe.

If you think you are ready to have all eyes on you and you can totally pull it off-- try buying a neon pink dress and pairing it with some cute black booties, black pumps, or black flats. (You probably get the idea with all the black mentioned in that sentence: black and neutrals are going to be your friend.)

If the neon piece is going to be the main part of your outfit, you don't want additional neon colors as accessories-- it will be way too much. So, instead, pair a neon pink dress with black or neutral accessories.

If you aren't ready to sport a neon pink dress but still want to rock the neon, try some of some of these suggestions.

Purchase a neon scarf. Pair the scarf with a black, white, beige, or brown top so your outfit will have a pop of color.

Another way to add neon is by wearing neon-colored bracelets. Again, let the bracelets add the color to the outfit and don't go overboard with the number of bracelets either.

Finally, a pair of neon shoes will add that pop of color to your outfit without it overpowering your outfit. B & L would suggest you don't spend too much $$$ on your neon shoes because you probably won't wear them very often.

What was I thinking?

Setting: B just left for school, which as many of you know is in Boston, and is driving down Rt. 128 South in order to get on Mass. Pike (Rt. 90).

As B bears to the right to get on the Pike, instead of staying to her left, Rt. 90E, she bears to her right, Rt. 90W. It wasn't until she reached the tolls to get onto 90W that she realized she was going the opposite way and would never reach Boston! (Worcester, yes. Boston, no.)

Once she recognized the situation, she said out loud to herself, "OH NO! What am I doing?? Calm down B just take a ticket and do a U-turn somewhere."

So, B tried to remain calm as she took a ticket from the toll machine and proceeded to get onto Rt. 90W. B quickly realized that while 90E tends to be zip-zip-zoom right around 4:45p.m., 90W is anything but zip-zip-zoom at that time.

So now B is moving at a snail's pace, watching the minutes tick by on her dashboard clock, wondering when that bridge by the State Police Barracks is going to come up and give her the opportunity to go up and around so that she can change directions.

Phew, she sees it, takes it, and now heads in the right direction!

Not all is perfect, though, as she pulls up to the toll attendant and tries to explain what just occurred. After several minutes, B is finally able to go along her merry way and get to school.

At 6:40 p.m., B looks at the clock and thinks, "wow this class has flown by! I can't believe it is already 7:40!" (7:40 being the time B's class is suppose to get out.) However, the professor still continues to talk and carry on the lecture, even moving to a new topic and a new case. B is not really sure why he could possibly be starting anything new, after all, in B's mind her next class is starting in 10 minutes!

Agitated, B texts L (who happened to be sick in bed) and tells her what is going on. L replies that B will probably have to wait, after all, the class doesn't end until 7:50! B could have sworn it ended at 7:40, but either way-- it didn't really matter she shouldn't be starting a new case at this point in time. So of course B texts L her arguments as to why the professor should not be starting a new case and how she is going to be late for her next class.

B begins to pack up everything (mind you it is only 6:45 PM and B still has approximately 55 minutes to one hour left in class) and sends a text to L letting her know that B was going to leave early so that she didn't miss her next class.

L's reply was simply, "B you're going to have to wait, there is still plently of time."

B completely confused by this text - plenty of time?! Five minutes is not plently of time!! - she decides to look at her digitial clock on her cell phone.

6:48 PM. Shoot!

B sent another text to L: OMG! I thought it was 7:48 PM not 6:48!!

B then spent the rest of the class hoping no one else would notice her mishap. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Right after her class ended her neighbor turned to her and said "You checked out of class at like 6:45....bahhahahaha!"

Luckily, she was able to get in and leave without incident for her last class of the night.

Meeting the parents is a big step.

You're nervous. You're hoping his/her parents like you. You're hoping it is nothing like "Meet the Fockers."

Now your worst nightmare happens: the parents don't like you and they have no qualms about showing it. So, what can you do?

Here are a couple of suggestions:

1. Understand where they are coming from. The parents may feel protective of their son/daughter and here you come intruding on their turf. Or, perhaps they are jealous and worried you are going to replace them. Then again it could be that you come from a different background and are afraid you'll have a negative influence on their child. If this is the case show them there is no reason to be jealous by asking for advice concerning their child or show an interest in their background. In time they won't see you as intruding on their turf which will help reduce that initial protective feeling.

2. Don't try to be besties. You goal should not be the parents' new BFF, but rather that you are a good person. If you try too hard it may come off as fake, after all you just met them, they may be your man's or girl's parents, but to you they are strangers. So, go with the mindset they are your equals so it will be easier to be yourself but they aren't your BFF.

3. Make them realize you care. Parents want what's best for their son/daughter so, naturally, they don't want you to break his/her heart. Plus, they don't want put forth the engery getting to know you if they think it will end quickly. You need to show them you care about their son/daughter. Here are some suggestions: hold hands (easy enough), kiss his cheek, or share a story (good, happy, and appropriate ones only!) that highlights how much he means to you or how happy he makes you.

4. Last option. If none of the above worked don't give up - stick up for yourself! If you worked so hard and there is no changing their opinion, you can at least make them respect you for not rolling over and playing dead for them. Plus you don't want esculating problems if this relationship becomes serious.
